The Wanted Board

One of my favorite things about life in Ukarumpa is the Wanted Board. No, this isn’t where rewards are offered for the capture of bad missionaries – it’s part of our electronic bulletin board system. We have newsgroups for Administrative updates, events happening in the Branch, things for sale, news articles, and many more.

The wanted board is where you post if there is something you need (obviously!). It’s amazing how well it works. Often when I post a request, I’ll have several replies within an hour. I mean, where else would people be checking a newsgroup to see if there is any way they can help out their neighbors?

Here is a list of the last 10 things that were posted on the wanted board, to give you an idea:

  1. Someone going to the US who could carry some packages to be mailed
  2. To buy a lamp
  3. red cabbage
  4. A ride to Madang next week
  5. An action/adventure movie to borrow
  6. DMC embroidery floss (that’s one I posted!)
  7. What to bait a mouse trap with
  8. Advent candles
  9. glass 9x13 baking dish
  10. ankle weights to borrow or buy

The above is a pretty typical listing of the kinds of things people request. I’m almost finished with my current cross stitch project, and so I thought I’d better start planning ahead for my next one. The store here does have some embroidery floss for sale, but not the full range of colors. (Incidentally, all of my fabric, needles and hoops were given to me because I posted a request on the Wanted board last year.) I need 45 colors for my pattern (yep – it’s a big one, that will probably last me until furlough in two years). After checking what I already had and shopping at the store, I still needed 15 colors. I thought I would post a request on the board before asking someone in the States to buy the other colors and mail them to me. I got offers for 10 out of the 15 colors that I needed. That’s pretty good! And I’m sure that someday I’ll be able to repay the favor by helping someone else out.
